Space Solar Cells
Silicon Technology for the Next Generation of Space Applications
The global space economy is growing rapidly. New satellite constellations, Earth observation, communication systems, and scientific missions are driving demand for powerful and cost-efficient energy solutions in orbit. Solar cells are a key enabling technology for virtually every space mission.
ISC Konstanz develops and manufactures high-performance silicon solar cells for space applications, bringing decades of experience in industrial solar cell technology to the rapidly evolving New Space market.
At the center of these activities is PHOENIX-Si, a novel silicon-based space solar cell technology developed at ISC. It combines the cost advantages and scalability of modern silicon technologies with high radiation tolerance and innovative in-orbit regeneration mechanisms. The goal is to provide powerful and economically attractive solar cells for future space missions.
To commercialize these technologies, ISC works closely with ASTROSIL. ASTROSIL is the exclusive license holder and development partner for ISC’s space solar cell technologies, responsible for their commercialization and industrial market introduction in the space sector. Through its exclusive licensing agreement, ASTROSIL gains access to ISC-developed technologies and the associated know-how.
ISC Konstanz is responsible for solar cell development and manufacturing, utilizing its research laboratories and pilot production facilities in Konstanz. Our expertise includes new cell architectures, process optimization, prototype manufacturing, and the production of pilot batches and small series for space applications.
Our services include:
- Development of silicon space solar cells
- Cell architecture design and optimization
- Pilot production and prototype manufacturing
- Small series and technology demonstrators
- Joint development projects with industry and space partners
- Technology transfer and industrial scale-up
This partnership combines ISC’s research and manufacturing expertise with ASTROSIL’s market-oriented commercialization activities – with the shared goal of enabling a new generation of European space solar cells for the growing global space economy.
